Physicals

Town Pediatrics encourages periodic, routine health, maintenance visits.  These give us an opportunity to review your child’s interim medical history; physical, social, and cognitive development; and general health.  In accordance with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Bright Futures Guidelines, we recommend checkups at the following intervals:

    • Newborns – approximately 2 days after discharge or upon the physician’s instruction
    • 2 weeks
    • 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 months
    • 2, 3, 4, 5 years
    • Yearly to every other year thereafter

18 month visit : Download and complete the M-CHAT checklist (from the Patient Forms Page of our website) prior to your visit.

The AAP recommends hearing and vision screenings for children ages 18 months and up as part of routine preventive care.  They have recently updated their policy and recommendations to include improved screening methods to enhance early detection of potentially serious and treatable conditions.  Town Pediatrics is pleased to be able to follow best-practice and offer these improved screenings:  Spot Vision and Select Picture Audiometry Hearing Test.  According to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are mandated to cover recommended hearing and vision screenings without cost-sharing to the patients.  Some insurance companies, however, are considering these improved screenings as “diagnostic” tools instead of “screening” tools.  Those insurance companies are imposing co-pay, co-insurance and/or deductible charges and possibly the full charge to the patient. If these potential fees are a concern for you please check with your insurance company prior to your well visit and ask them if CPT codes 99177 and 92583 are covered as a preventive service.

School and Daycare Physicals

Bring all paperwork that you need us to complete for school and daycare including health forms, medication forms, emergency treatment forms.  Give these to the nurse at the beginning of your appointment so that they can be completed during the appointment.  There is a $10 form fee for any forms not completed during the visit.

Sports Physicals

Yearly sports physicals should be scheduled well in advance of the due date for the form, especially during high demand summer months.  School sports participation in the state of Virginia requires that physicals be done after May 1 for the upcoming school year.

Sports physicals are required for high school student school sports participation.  If done at our office these will be done as a full, well child checkup which includes a more complete exam than is done during a physical at your high school or at an urgent care facility.  Your child will also receive preventive health counseling at this visit.  Most insurance companies will cover this service in our office since it is performed as a well child exam.

Please bring in the Athletic Participation Form (Patient Forms Page of our website) at the time of your child’s appointment.  You should complete the second page of the form before the appointment since the physician needs to review the medical form with you before completing your child’s physical.
